Fit Testing Policy

Qualitative fit testing is a pass/fail test method that uses your reaction to an irritant in order to detect leakage into the respirator facepiece. Qualitative fit testing does not measure the actual amount of leakage. Qualitative fit testing is normally used for half-mask respirators or filtering facepiece respirators (often called N95s).  Qualitative fit testing is an important test that checks how well a respirator facepiece seals to your face. During this test, you wear the respirator and are exposed to a specific irritant, such as a bitter or sweet aerosol. Your reaction to this irritant helps determine if there is any leakage into the mask. While this test does not measure how much air may enter the respirator, it reliably shows whether the respirator has a good fit. 

This type of testing is particularly useful for half-mask respirators and filtering facepiece respirators, often called N95 respirators. These are widely used in various fields, such as healthcare, construction, and manufacturing, where there is a risk of harmful airborne particles. By ensuring a proper fit, qualitative fit testing helps protect the health and safety of workers in potentially dangerous environments.

To Schedule An Appointment

• Upon successful payment, you will receive a link to complete your medical questionnaire within 24 hours
• Email a copy of your approved medical questionnaire to QLFT@smithmedicalgroup.org
• Upon receipt of your approved medical questionnaire, you will be contacted to schedule an appointment to complete your fit testing

If you find that you are unable to attend your scheduled fit Testing session, we ask that you reschedule your appointment at least 8 hours in advance. You have the option to reschedule your session only once, providing flexibility for your schedule. However, please keep in mind that if you do not reschedule at least 8 hours before your original appointment time, your fit testing fee will be forfeited. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter, as it helps us manage our appointments effectively.
